Edge Hill in Cairns locked down after shooting


Queensland police are warning people away from Edge Hill in Cairns due to a shooting.

A large exclusion zone has been set up after two vehicles had collided and one person discharged a firearm at another before leaving on foot about 1pm.

An emergency situation was declared just before 2pm, with an exclusion zone encompassing Pease Street, Woodward Street, Polentz Street and Russell Street.

Edge Hill State School is within the exclusion zone with parents urged to pick up their children via Pease Street.

A Queensland Police Service told the Courier Mail people that people should avoid the area for their own safety.

“We’re have police responding to an unfolding incident and the public are asked to avoid the area,” he said.

“Definitely the public should avoid the area and stay inside.”

Tactical response officers are reportedly among the heavy police presence in the area.

Parents have been asked to not come and collect their children at the local until the incident is resolved.

Edge Hill State School told news.com.au it was officially on lock down but children are now being returned to their parents.

TheCourier Mail initially reported that the parent’s received a message that warned them off coming to the area.

“Please be aware, all of our students and staff are safe and well. We would ask that you do not come to collect your child until we have been advised it is safe to do so.

“An update will be provided by the school when the lockdown has concluded.”
